The title refers to the Daoist concept of the inner gods of the body that are responsible for the health and function. Hsiung was also interested in this idea of an “inner landscape” as depicted in the neijing tu. A volcanic eruption is an event where the internal, buried, and hidden is brought to the surface and externalized. There is a rhyming of this that intrigued Hsiung and points back to relationships between the earth, nature, and the human body - all of which undergo endless change.
