Baubo is from Hellenic and Ancient Greek mythologies but has a similar counterpart in Japanese mythology; Ame-no-Uzume-no-Mikoto. She is imaged as a woman’s lower torso with a woman’s face drawn on her large belly. She is a female clown, telling lewd or sensual jokes while nude or semi-nude in order to bring laughter to Demeter (in the case of Greek mythology) or Amaterasu-Ōmikami (in the case of Japanese mythology), both of whom were hiding or suffering. There are formal resonances to the image of Baubo but the theme of female sensuality and merriment on behalf of other females is intrical to the work.
